How to Avoid Flight Booking Scams: A UK Traveller's Checklist

By World Travel & Tours  |  Safe Booking  |  22 October 2026  |  7 min read

Flight booking fraud costs UK travellers millions of pounds every year, and it peaks just before Christmas, Eid and the summer holidays. This checklist shows you how to spot a scam and pay safely.

Most flight booking scams follow the same pattern. Someone offers a fare that is far cheaper than anything else on the market, there is pressure to pay today, and the payment goes somewhere it can't be traced or reversed. Families buying tickets to visit relatives in Africa and Asia are targeted heavily, because they often book through personal contacts, WhatsApp groups and social media adverts.

At World Travel & Tours we see the results of these scams every year: customers who call us after paying someone else for a ticket that never existed. Use this guide before you pay anyone for a flight, including us.

Warning Signs of a Flight Booking Scam

  • You're asked to pay into a personal bank account. A genuine travel company takes payment into a business account in the company's name. "My manager's account" or "my cousin's account, it's quicker" is a red flag.
  • The price is far below everyone else's. Consolidator fares can be cheaper than airline websites, but not by hundreds of pounds on a peak-date ticket. If a December Lagos or Dhaka fare looks half price, be very careful.
  • Pressure to pay immediately. "The price ends in 30 minutes" is a classic tactic designed to stop you checking.
  • Contact only by WhatsApp or social media, with no landline, no registered company and no physical address.
  • A "confirmation" with no airline booking reference, or a PDF that you can't check on the airline's website.
  • Payment by bank transfer, gift cards, crypto or money transfer services only. Any business that refuses card payments for flights deserves a second look.
  • Lookalike websites and accounts that copy the name, logo or phone number of a real company but use a slightly different web address, email domain or WhatsApp number.
Important: World Travel & Tours will never ask you to pay into a personal account. Before you make any payment, verify it with us through our official WhatsApp (+44 207 993 0081) or our sales email (sales@worldtravelandtours.co.uk).

How to Verify a Travel Agent Before You Pay

  1. Check the company on Companies House. A UK travel business should be a registered company or a clearly identified sole trader. Search the name on the free Companies House register and check that the address matches the one the agent gave you.
  2. Check any ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website. If an agent says your booking is ATOL protected, the CAA's ATOL check tool will show whether the number is real and who it belongs to.
  3. Check ABTA or IATA membership claims on the ABTA website or with the airline. Logos on a website are easy to copy, but entries on official registers are not.
  4. Call the landline listed on the official website, not a number from an advert or a message, and ask for a written quote by email from the company's own domain.
  5. Search the company name plus "scam" or "reviews" and read recent independent reviews, not just testimonials on the agent's own site.

The Safest Ways to Pay for Flights

Credit card is usually the safest option. Under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, when you pay for something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a UK credit card, the card provider can be jointly liable if the goods or services aren't delivered. Debit cards don't have Section 75 cover, but many banks offer a "chargeback" process if a service is never provided.

Bank transfers are harder to recover. Since October 2024, UK banks must reimburse many victims of authorised push payment (APP) fraud, but there are limits and conditions, and you need to report it quickly. If you do pay by bank transfer, make sure the account name matches the company name, and confirm the account details by phone using a number you already trust.

Pro tip: If anyone sends you "new bank details" by email or message, treat it as a scam until you have confirmed it by phone. Changed bank details are one of the most common tricks in invoice fraud.

How to Check Your Ticket Is Real

Once you have paid, you should receive an e-ticket with a six-character airline booking reference (PNR) and, for issued tickets, a 13-digit ticket number. You can check most bookings on the airline's "Manage my booking" page using that reference and the passenger's surname. If the booking doesn't appear, or the agent refuses to give you a reference, contact the airline directly.

A booking that is "on hold" is not the same as an issued ticket. Ask your agent to confirm in writing when the ticket has been issued.

What to Do If You've Been Scammed

  1. Call your bank or card provider immediately on the number on the back of your card and tell them it's fraud. Speed matters for stopping and recovering payments.
  2. Report it to Action Fraud (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) online or on 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, report it to Police Scotland on 101.
  3. Keep everything: messages, emails, screenshots, payment receipts and the phone numbers used.
  4. Warn others in any group or community chat where the "agent" found you, and report the account on the platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a travel agent is genuine?

Check the company on Companies House, verify any ATOL number on the CAA website, call the landline on the official website, and only pay into a business account in the company's name.

Is it safe to pay for flights by bank transfer?

It can be, but it is the hardest payment type to recover if something goes wrong. A credit card gives you Section 75 protection on purchases between £100 and £30,000. If you pay by transfer, confirm the account details by phone first.

Will World Travel & Tours ever ask me to pay into a personal account?

No. We never ask customers to pay into a personal account. Please verify any payment request with us through our official WhatsApp or sales email before you pay.

How do I check that my flight ticket has been issued?

Ask for the airline booking reference and the 13-digit e-ticket number, then look up the booking on the airline's Manage My Booking page with the passenger surname.
