Christmas Flights to Africa: When to Book and How to Save
December is the busiest month of the year for flights from the UK to Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Harare and Johannesburg. Here's how to book Christmas flights to Africa without paying the highest prices.
For the British-African community, December means weddings, family reunions, Detty December in Accra and Lagos, and New Year at home. Demand from the UK is enormous, and airlines know it. Fares for the week before Christmas can easily be double the price of the same flight in November. The good news: with the right timing and a bit of flexibility, you can still travel for much less.
When to Book Christmas Flights to Africa
The best fares for December usually sell out first. As a rule of thumb:
- Ideal: book between June and early September for travel in mid to late December.
- Still reasonable: September and October, especially for early-December departures.
- Expensive: November onwards, when the lowest fare classes on popular dates are often gone.
If you're reading this late in the year, don't panic. Last-minute seats do appear when airlines add capacity or release group allocations. Call us and we will check consolidator availability that doesn't show online.
The Cheapest and Most Expensive Dates
Patterns differ by airline and route, but these trends are consistent on UK to Africa routes:
| Travel window | Typical demand | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 December (outbound) | Medium | Often the best balance of price and a long stay |
| 12 to 23 December (outbound) | Very high | Peak school-holiday departures, so book earliest |
| 24 and 25 December | Lower | Flying on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day can be cheaper |
| 1 to 6 January (return) | Very high | Everyone flies back before school and work restart |
| From about 10 January (return) | Falling | Staying an extra week can cut the return price sharply |
Smart Routing Ideas
- Connect through a hub. Non-stop flights to Lagos, Accra, Nairobi and Johannesburg fill first. Connections via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Dubai (Emirates) or Doha (Qatar Airways) often have seats left at lower prices.
- Try a different UK airport. Manchester and Birmingham have good one-stop connections and can be cheaper than Heathrow at peak times. Read our UK airports guide.
- Mix airlines. Flying out on one airline and back on another can save money when one carrier's return dates are full.
- Consider business class. On some peak dates the gap between a last-minute economy fare and a discounted business class fare is smaller than you'd think, and business class includes extra baggage.
Baggage at Christmas
Christmas trips usually mean gifts. Before you compare fares, check whether each ticket includes one or two checked bags, and what an extra bag costs. Pre-booking extra baggage is almost always cheaper than paying at the airport. See our full baggage allowance guide.
