Travel Agent vs Comparison Sites: Which Gets You the Cheapest Flight?
Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo and Cheapflights have changed how we search for flights. But are they always cheapest? Here's an honest look at when a comparison site wins and when a specialist travel agent does.
If you're booking a long-haul flight from the UK, chances are you've opened Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo or Cheapflights first. They are excellent tools, and we use them ourselves to check the market. But they are search engines, not travel agents, and that difference matters when your trip is expensive, complicated or at peak dates.
How Comparison Sites Actually Work
Comparison sites (also called metasearch engines) scan prices from airlines and online travel agencies and show you a list. When you click "Select", you leave the comparison site and book with whoever is selling the ticket. The comparison site is usually paid for that referral. This means:
- The price you see is the price published online by that seller at that moment.
- Your contract is with the airline or online agency you click through to, which may be based outside the UK.
- After-sales help (date changes, cancellations, schedule changes) comes from that seller, not from the comparison site.
When Comparison Sites Are the Best Choice
- Short, simple trips, for example a return to Lisbon or Frankfurt on a low-cost airline.
- Flexible dates, when you want to scan a whole month to find the cheapest day.
- Getting a quick feel for prices before you speak to anyone.
When a Specialist Travel Agent Can Beat Them
1. Fares that aren't published online
Specialist agents can access consolidator (wholesale) fares that airlines agree with agents and do not show on public websites. On long-haul routes to West Africa, East Africa and South Asia, these fares can be lower than the public price, especially for economy tickets with generous baggage and for business class.
2. Peak dates and big families
At Christmas, Eid and in August, cheap seats sell out fast. An agent can hold seats, split a family across fare levels, or build a route that a search engine doesn't show, such as flying out on one airline and back on another.
3. Deposits and flexible payment
Comparison sites send you to sellers that normally want full payment straight away. A specialist agent can often offer a deposit and pay-later option on selected fares, which helps when you're booking for several people.
4. A real person when things change
Airlines change schedules, flights get cancelled and plans change. With an agent you have one UK phone number and a named team who can rebook you, instead of chatbots and overseas call centres.
5. Baggage and routing advice
A fare that's £30 cheaper but has one checked bag instead of two isn't cheaper if you're travelling with gifts for family. Agents compare the total trip cost, not just the headline fare.
How to Use Both and Pay Less
- Search on a comparison site to see the lowest published fare for your dates.
- Take a screenshot of the fare, the airline, times and baggage allowance.
- Call or WhatsApp a specialist agent such as World Travel & Tours and ask them to beat it on the same terms.
- Compare like for like: baggage, change fees, connection times, and who you will deal with if something goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are comparison sites like Skyscanner always the cheapest?
Not always. They show published online fares. Specialist agents can sometimes offer lower consolidator fares, especially on long-haul routes to Africa and Asia and for business class.
Do comparison sites sell tickets?
Mostly no. They are search engines that send you to an airline or online travel agency to book. Your booking and after-sales support are with that seller.
Can a travel agent beat a price I found online?
Often, yes, particularly on long-haul and peak-season routes. Send us the details of the fare you found and we will check whether we can beat it on the same terms.
